A Story of Surprising Generosity: The Time a Student Let Me Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

During the year 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. I assumed to book lodging when I arrived, however when I arrived, a big convention was taking place and all the budget hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

Hailing from Singapore, the idea crossed my mind the possibility of just sleep at the airport – only to discover that airport, not like the one back home, closes around the clock. With no idea what my next move should be and growing worried, I caught a bus into town and started wandering in the direction of the casino, thinking it was a place to spend the evening in a place that stayed open 24/7. That wouldn’t put me in the best shape to succeed at the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a student on a tight budget, I couldn’t afford.

We could all use more folks like that woman.

Apparently, I appeared lost since a female student saw me walking aimlessly through downtown and asked if I was OK. I shared my predicament and immediately she suggested I was welcome to sleep on the floor of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, given that my my medical school interview would take place the next morning. Generously, she also provided some food: a leftover filled rolls she brought back her evening job. I was able to use warm shower facilities and a secure location to rest for the evening.

Looking back, I now understand what a big chance she took being a woman letting a guy she had only just encountered crash at her place. Back then I was in my own unawareness and was oblivious to the potential danger. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – yet very grateful.

Ultimately, I did not attending the Australian National University, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. It is my wish life has rewarded her good deed tenfold. We could all use more individuals like that woman.
