The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at the age of 80.

He was celebrated for his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the pop-rock group Duran Duran's classic music video for "their hit Rio".

"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message on social media."

This news arrives just weeks after he presented his latest collection in London, his first in more than 30 years. The performer Lily Allen walked in a dress inspired by the notorious black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.

A Lasting Legacy

Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the company Stirling Copper and was responsible for the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger wore during the band's "Gimme Shelter" tour in the late sixties.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and staged his first fashion show a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "true original," in the words of the UK's fashion authority.

By the 1990s, he began working on pieces for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, such as various looks for her US tour after assuming the title.

Following a profession lasting more than five decades, Price presented his final runway show in London last month in partnership with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: A hallmark of his work.
  • Theatrical Flair: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Boundary-Pushing Tailoring: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

The industry says farewell to a genuine innovator whose influence on style and culture remains profoundly felt.
