Cameroonian Political Opposition Leader Confronts Legal Proceedings Concerning Post-Election Violence, Government Announces

Political Protest in Cameroon
Numerous in Cameroon show outrage over the fact that the president has won an eighth term

The nation's Minister of the Interior the interior minister has declared that political opponent Issa Tchiroma Bakary will be prosecuted over allegations that he provoked "violent post-election demonstrations".

No fewer than four protesters have been killed during skirmishes between security forces and opposition supporters since Cameroon's election on October 12, with the 92-year-old head of state winning an eighth term in office.

Issa Tchiroma asserts that he emerged victorious, a claim dismissed by Biya's ruling party, the ruling CPDM.

Forceful measures by police and security officers on protesters have concerned the international community, with the United Nations, African Union and European Union calling for restraint.

Official's Claims

Recently, the interior minister accused Tchiroma Bakary of organising what he described as "unlawful" rallies resulting in the deaths, and also condemned him for claiming win in the electoral contest.

He added that the opposition leader's "co-conspirators responsible for an insurrectionary plan" will also face legal action.

Vote Outcome

The president, who came to power in the early 80s and is now the oldest serving president, secured the 12 October election with a majority of the ballots, compared to just over a third for his opponent, according to the constitutional court.

Leader's Stance

Tchiroma Bakary is yet to respond to the official announcement to try him, but he had earlier announced that he refused to acknowledge a rigged election - and that he was not afraid of being arrested.

When results were announced, he claimed that security forces shot on demonstrators assembled near his home in Garoua, causing the death of at least two people.

Investigation Revealed

On Tuesday, the government official disclosed that an probe would be started into violent incidents surrounding the publication of the vote outcome.

"Throughout the violence, some of the individuals involved died," he commented, without offering a specific number of demonstrators who have been lost their lives in the confrontations.

The minister added that several personnel of the security forces also suffered serious injuries.

Current Situation

While the interior minister maintained the condition nationwide was now manageable, demonstrators are still demonstrating in certain regions of the nation, especially in these two cities, where protesters established barricades on Tuesday, and ignited tyres on the roads.

Analysts caution that the political turmoil could plunge the nation into a political crisis.
