Around 50 vehicles have been marked with what seems to be blood from a person in the Germany's city of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm authorities.
Cars, exterior walls and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they announced in a official communication.
Police report they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The fluid had been placed in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they stated.
Police then discovered multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws prohibiting the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials say early analysis show the fluid was probably blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its source; investigators are not yet aware of any harm in association with the occurrence," they added.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to unravel the incident" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A senior representative commented the incident left him stunned and required to be resolved promptly.
"This incident strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he stated on online, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of immigrant origin in five years prior.
