Condemnation Surges as Former President Trump's Comments on Director Rob Reiner Spurs Fierce Backlash

Individuals from both sides of the partisan aisle and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn former President Donald Trump for his statements following the shocking passing of acclaimed filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.

A Provocative Social Media Statement

After the couple were found dead at their Los Angeles home, Trump posted on social media to describe the late director as "anguished and suffering". The post, he asserted Reiner's demise was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable condition with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".

His comments quickly shifted to praising his own achievements, contrasting Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".

Police Update and Detention

Authorities have since confirmed the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of murder in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was established at a significant amount.

A Torrent of Criticism from Celebrities and Politicians

The response to Trump's post was immediate and harsh.

“What a disgusting and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.

Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, similarly criticized the remarks. Goldberg pointed to prior comments from Trump regarding political violence, demanding, "Do you have no decency? Is it possible to get any worse?"

The state of California's Governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a disturbed man."

Mirroring this view, Congressman Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of garbage."

Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying the Reiners brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. Deeply disturbing."

Rebuke from Within Political Ranks

A number of Republican lawmakers also voiced disapproval.

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or rivals". Greene also alluded to challenges with substance abuse and mental health within families.

Another Republican representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "unacceptable and disgraceful" given the circumstances. He openly dared others in his party to justify the comments.

Reiner's History and Views on Trump

Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. During a past interview, he argued Trump was "not psychologically suited" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of authoritarian rule should Trump be reelected to power.

"We see authoritarianism on the rise around the world," Reiner noted. "If we crumble, there’s a risk that democracy crumble around the world."

Regardless of his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced political violence without reservation following the shooting of a different individual.

An Ironic Connection: The Art of the Deal

Adding a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who captured the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.

Rob Reiner had previously shared the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's request for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
