American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay amid the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their duties uncompensated.

But some have been absent, leading airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays caused by weather and additional factors.

Over three thousand American flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy stated he expects the circumstances to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their concerns firsthand.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, can I find another source of income to make ends meet?'" he continued.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - among the peak since the shutdown began.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second most extended shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," the official said.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth most active terminal in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as other flights stretching north to the city of Oakland, California.

The Federal Aviation Administration notice was issued at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Many flights were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Liberty International Airport, however, were delayed an average of over an hour due to personnel issues, and the FAA said DFW, the second-busiest airport in the country, could encounter problems from low staffing in the afternoon.

The agency warned passengers in the state to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The situation precedes Game 3 of the World Series, which is scheduled in LA on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, one of the busiest times to fly in the US.

Pressure on US air travel helped end a federal closure in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected airline operations, including pilot training.

It led several air traffic controllers to stay home on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting movement at New York's LaGuardia airport.

On that date, the former president, who at the period was in his first term as president, consented to approve a temporary funding measure, effectively ending the government shutdown after 35 days.
