“This is the most important contest, currently, in the heavyweight division. These two guys have stepped up when neither fighter needed to make this fight. Parker is the interim WBO titleholder and they have previously mandated the champion to fight him, but the Ukrainian was hurt. Parker is eager to compete regardless.

“Fabio is similarly well-placed and he could have just waited for his chance. He said ‘No, thanks.’ He desired to compete – and against Parker because it gives him a chance to accelerate his path.”

Parker, who turns 34 in January, said: “It's win or go home. I am not considering defeat. I honor my adversary and what he has done and the way he's trained for this contest. But I am on a higher plane and I am going to show it on fight night.”

Wardley, approaching 31, and he said: “It is a massive night for the two of us. It is clearly the most significant bout of my professional life and the most important fight ever. But every time I step up I rise to the occasion. Saturday will be no exception. The divide between Parker's status and where people think I am has been a common theme during my entire career.

“He has been going around the block for a considerable period, with a numerous contests on his resume. Certainly not is he an old man but he has been in the boxing world for a long time and had numerous grueling matches. I’ve been in a few wars myself and I understand they take a toll. He has been in a lot more of those than me.”
