Music Legend Barry Manilow Scheduled for a Procedure for Cancer in His Lung.
Barry Manilow announced that he has been diagnosed with a cancerous growth in his lung and is set to have a surgical procedure.
Spot Found in Initial Phase
The octogenarian performer, famous for his series of upbeat chart-toppers from "I Write the Songs" cemented his status as one of pop music’s most beloved performers, will have a procedure to extract a portion of his lung in an effort to fight off the illness, which is detected early.
“For those who have been following, I recently suffered from six weeks of a severe cough followed by a return of another five weeks.
“Even though I was past the infection and performing again for my residency, my excellent physician ordered an MRI just to ensure that there were no issues.
“The MRI identified a tumor on my left side that requires removed. It’s pure luck (and a great doctor) that it was caught so early.”
Postponed Performances
He has postponed a number of forthcoming live performances, but suggested he would be returning to perform by mid-February for his enduring concert series in Las Vegas.
He added: “The doctors do not believe it has traveled and I’m taking tests to support their conclusion. So, that’s it. No chemotherapy. No radiation. Just home remedies and classic TV.
“I’m counting the days until I return to my second home for our Vegas run for our special weekend performances.”
Decades in the Spotlight
Manilow is currently in the 16th year of a show at the Westgate Las Vegas. The singer has been in the limelight and revealed he is gay in 2017, after wedding his manager and long-term partner privately in 2014.
The couple were in a discreet relationship for more than 35 years. Last year, Manilow discussed how vital his partner had been to him during his ascent to stardom in the 1970s.
“During my rapid rise to fame, it was just crazy. And, you know, coming home to an vacant room, you can land in a lot of trouble if you, you know, you’re on your own night after night,” he said.
“But I met Garry right around when it was exploding. And I no longer had to go back to those lonesome rooms. I had a partner to share sorrows with or to share joys with.
“I wish that newcomers today don’t have to go back to those suites by themselves, because you can make poor choices. I never did. But it was pretty lonely until I met Garry. And then it was joyful.”
