New York Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn revealed that he recently spoke with cornerback Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “in good spirits” during their recent conversation.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His wife and child, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
Glenn was unsure when Boyd would leave the medical facility, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “However, I can share, hearing him speak, he seemed very positive. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
NYPD shared surveillance images Monday of an individual wanted in the shooting of Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. There were no additional victims as confirmed by officials.
The shooting happened around 2 a.m. on Sunday near Madison Square Garden and the iconic square. Boyd, twenty-nine, was admitted to a medical center after being shot in the abdomen, as reported. The perpetrator got away.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since learning of the incident. Glenn added that Boyd and his spouse recently welcomed a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he just had a kid,” Glenn noted. “And I’m thinking about his wife, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, that I won’t detail, but I’m happy at the fact that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd did not participate during the current season, his first with the Jets, after going on the season-ending injured reserve list on August 18 with a shoulder issue that involved surgical repair.
He signed with New York as an unrestricted free agent in spring and was anticipated to become a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and ST coordinator Chris Banjo. However, he got hurt during a practice session on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd has remained around the team all season long while working his way back.
“He remains involved with our activities,” Glenn commented. “I mean, he attends every game. He is completely involved. As one of the league’s best on special teams, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, a Texas native, began his career with Minnesota after being a seventh-round pick by Minnesota out of UT in 2019. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and moved to Houston’s squad after that. Boyd inked a single-season agreement valued at $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
