Nicolas Sarkozy Preparing to Release Prison Memoir Detailing His 20 Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy will soon publish a personal account next month named Notes from a Cell, chronicling his experience endured behind bars.

The revelation was made just 11 days following the ex-leader gained freedom as he appeals his conviction related to criminal conspiracy regarding a scheme to secure political financing linked to the leadership of the late Libyan dictator.

Time in Custody: Inner Thoughts

“In prison visibility is limited, and nothing to do,” he reflects in an extract, indicating the book centers around his musings from solitary confinement rather than extensive analysis regarding the packed and struggling French prison system.

“I forget silence, which doesn’t exist in that facility, where noise is a lot to hear,” he states. “The racket persists relentlessly. Yet, similar to barren lands, one’s inner world is strengthened behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, he participated by video link from a room in prison, describing his time inside as exhausting. He stated to the judge: “I wish to commend those working in the jail, who are exceptionally humane, and who helped make this nightmare bearable – as it truly is one.”

“I never imagined at this stage of life, I’d find myself behind bars. It’s an ordeal I must endure. I confess it’s hard, extremely tough. It has an impact on any prisoner due to its intensity.”

Unprecedented Situation

He, who served as France’s president between 2007 and 2012, became the inaugural ex-leader from the EU and the first postwar leader of France to be incarcerated.

Before entering jail he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to compose an account.

Reading Material

Unconfirmed is did he manage to go through the texts he took into prison: a life story of Jesus spanning two books and Alexandre Dumas’s novel the famous story, a plot where a wrongfully accused individual is imprisoned but escapes to seek vengeance.

Prison Conditions

Sarkozy was placed in isolation for his own security in a room approximately nine square meters including private facilities at La Santé prison in the city. Security personnel were stationed in a neighbouring cell.

It was stated that he had eaten solely dairy snacks in prison because he feared meals provided might have been spat on. Options were available for self-catering but refused this, as per accounts. Unclear remains if the memoir includes meals during incarceration.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, who saw him regularly every day throughout the jail term, told the release hearing he would be safer released rather than in custody. “There were threats against his life, has heard screaming during nighttime plus rapid actions in an adjacent room during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Case Background

His incarceration began last month after a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence for illegal collaboration over a scheme to obtain election financing for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence and has appealed against the verdict, with a new trial is scheduled for next spring.
