A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major public works projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This rail line was closely associated with his administration's economic goals for the southeastern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a dramatic growth of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid rate, surpassing expectations to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-fatal derailments.
Demands for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a major opposition party called for an immediate suspension in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the situation "calls for swift accountability."
In reaction, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these national initiatives.
