Putin Vows Uninterrupted Crude Oil Deliveries to India in Rebuff of American Sanctions

Amid a clear message to the United States, Leader Vladimir Putin has told Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to guarantee “continuous” deliveries of crude oil to India. This declaration came as the two leaders met in the Indian capital and declared their bilateral ties were “resistant to external pressure.”

A Message For the United States

This affirmation, delivered Friday, seemed to be targeted at the United States and its allies, that have sought to urge New Delhi into scaling back its longstanding links with Moscow. The backdrop follows earlier US actions, such as the imposition of tariffs on India due to its purchase of Moscow's energy exports.

“Russia is a dependable supplier of fuel and anything needed for the development of India’s energy sector,” he stated. “Russia is prepared to keep guaranteeing the steady flow of fuel for the rapidly growing Indian economy.”

The Indian leader, though he did not mentioning oil directly, reinforced the focus by stating that “a stable energy base has been a strong and crucial foundation of the India-Russia cooperation.”

Challenging American Pressure

Before the talks, in a television interview, Putin had challenged American pressure over India's oil imports. Putin stated, “Should America is entitled to buy our atomic materials, why shouldn’t India claim the same privilege?”

This trip represented his initial trip to India following the start of the war in Ukraine, and both sides engaged in a visible show to demonstrate that the bond between the heads of state was undisturbed.

A Personal Greeting

Employing an rare move, Prime Minister Modi personally greeted Putin upon his arrival. The two exchanged a hearty embrace akin to longtime companions before holding a private dinner on Thursday evening.

Modi later described India's relationship with Russia as “a beacon” and noted it was “based on reciprocal esteem and strong faith.”

Reaffirming Defence and Economic Ties

Friday's talks resulted in several key agreements across defence and financial collaboration. A major outcome was the signing of an joint economic plan that runs to 2030, which targets to increase twofold commerce to one hundred billion dollars per year by the target year.

Additionally agreed to restructure their military partnership. Although Russia remains India's biggest source of weapons, the volume has declined in recent years as India has sought widen its sources.

The joint statement highlighted plans for the co-development of cutting-edge military systems, although direct details of deals for the Su-57 fighter jet were left out.

Ultimately, both nations restated that amid the “ongoing challenging, strained, and volatile global landscape, Russian-Indian ties stay durable to foreign influence.”
