The Porcine Pardon: Pig Named Six Seven Granted Clemency by Miami Dade County Leader.
Although not quite at the identical stature as sparing Thanksgiving turkeys, but the county's top official experienced a presidential-style act this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She deserves this act of mercy. Her criminal record is spotless,” declared Levine Cava in a speech with inescapable allusions to the extraordinary and sizable number of executive clemencies issued from the start of the commencement of a second term in office.
“Unless you count eating half a dozen apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a lengthy and joyful existence away from worry.”
This ceremony, simultaneously observing and challenging the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to replicate the yearly bird sparing at the White House.
The pig, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people shouting “6-7” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so ubiquitous that a prominent word reference recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A Peaceful Retirement
Six Seven the pig is now set to enjoy its days at a farm sanctuary “far from charcoal and roasting pans”, according to the event’s official press release.
“This swine clemency has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the holiday season,” said the cafe owner, in a notably cheerful message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, multicultural, and grounded in customs that bring people together. Every time, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Participants enjoyed a meat-free selection of spinach croquetas and strong coffee as they toasted Six Seven’s big moment.
