Ultra-Conservative Ex- Legislator J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Next Head of State.
Following a conclusive runoff election, far-right figure José Antonio Kast has secured the top job in Chile.
A Commanding Win
After more than 99% of polling stations reporting, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This represents Kast's third bid for the presidency, having previously been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Platform Focused On Law and Order and Immigration
Recognized for his staunch socially conservative views and regard for the period of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was mostly built on promises to combat growing crime and drastically restrict immigration.
He repeatedly blamed migrants, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for public safety problems. During the election cycle, he delivered an ultimatum for them to exit before the March 11 handover or face deportation.
His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as erecting camps, high walls, electric fences, and increasing the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Regional Trend
Numerous analysts see Kast's victory as fitting into a wider right-wing shift in Latin America, following this year's electoral wins in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other analysts further view it as a continuation of the regular swing of power between left-wing and right-wing governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Clear Majority
In spite of his clear popular vote win, Kast is not expected to hold an overall majority in Congress, not in the lower house nor the Senate, even when all rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation may hinder his plans, including a promise to cut public spending by $6 billion within a year and a half—a proposal for which he has yet to provided specifics.
"We have several aspects about how a Kast presidency will be that we don't know because he has not explained his methods for implement them," noted a political expert.
The analyst continued, "In terms of economic policy, it is very likely we will see adjustment measures common for the right-wing. But where there is considerably less ambiguity is on law and order, because that has been his central theme during the race."
