Its own survey reported that a large proportion of member firms felt that the existing agreement was not helping commercial success.

A host of further domains could, potentially, see a comparable strategy – alignment with EU regulations – in exchange for lowering post-Brexit barriers across manufacturing, in the car industry, industrial chemicals, or for example in VAT procedures.

European Reaction

European capitals were unimpressed by the lack of ambition in last year's reset, particularly the London's refusal of ideas floated by some commentators regarding the simplified access of British exports to the single market.

The precise arrangements on electricity and agricultural regulations is remains to be agreed. A initiative for UK manufacturers to be involved in a major defence loan fund has been delayed over the cost of the membership fee, after opposition from Paris. Canada has signed up to the scheme.

On the national stage, the leadership also anticipates being outflanked on Brexit not just one opposition party, but potentially a further party, which is campaigning in its key electoral areas in local votes.
